Panasonic's DMC-FZ18 - a versatile camera with 28mm wide-angle lens and 18x optical zoom

The perfect choice for any photographer with varied photographic needs and high ambitions - Panasonic is pleased to introduce the new DMC-FZ18 8.1-megapixel Lumix camera, featuring a powerful 18x optical zoom (equivalent to 28-504mm on a 35mm film camera), newly developed 28mm wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens and Panasonic's new and unique Intelligent Auto Mode. Panasonic's award winning FZ series of Lumix cameras has been highly praised across the world, for concomitant realisation of both high performance and ease of use, and the FZ18 is no exception.

Bridging the gap between high-end compacts and digital SLRs, Panasonic's DMC-FZ18 offers a level of control close to that of an SLR, but without the need for interchangeable lenses. Perfect for photographers on the move and families who want to shoot pictures outdoors for example, the FZ18 offers an easy way to enjoy the fun of capturing beautiful digital pictures.

Broaden your outlook and get the big picture
Panasonic has packaged a 28mm wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens with f/2.8-4.2 brightness and a powerful 18x optical zoom (equivalent to 28-504mm on a 35mm film camera) plus an 8.1 megapixel CCD into a compact, portable body.

Comprising eleven elements in eight groups, including three aspherical lenses and two ED lenses that notably minimise the chromatic aberration that is likely to occur in telephone lenses, this advanced lens unit passes Leica's stringent standards and delivers an exceptional optical performance. The zoom ratio can be extended up to 28.7x in 3-megapixel resolution mode with minimal deterioration thanks to the Extra Optical Zoom. By using the central part of the CCD, this powerful zooming function allows you to easily capture and magnify distant subjects.

Intelligent Auto Mode - the camera does the hard work so you don't have to!
For more simple and more intelligent operation than ever, Lumix is offering the ideal automatic shooting. Building on the success of Simple Mode and I.ISO Mode, Panasonic's unique Intelligent Auto Mode is newly incorporated and introduces a new concept to photography - the ultimate auto mode. With Intelligent Auto Mode, the camera automatically selects the most appropriate setting according to the situation without any user interface. Designed for ease of use, simply select Intelligent Auto mode from the dial and the camera will automatically detect motion (Intelligent ISO), shake (MEGA O.I.S), face (Face Detection) and scene (Scene Detection) and select the settings accordingly. These multi-capable functions happen automatically, so you can shoot without the bother of adjusting settings every time conditions change. Lumix and its powerful Intelligent Auto Mode do all the work for you. Now anyone at any technical level of photography can take beautiful pictures with ease.

The technologies that Intelligent Auto Mode Covers
Panasonic incorporates both MEGA O.I.S (Optical Image Stabiliser) to compensate for handshake and Intelligent ISO control system to detect and suppress motion blur into all Lumix cameras, which are the industry's most advanced countermeasures against blurring.

In addition to these two paramount anti-blurring technologies, Intelligent Auto Mode also features face detection and scene detection. The Scene Selector automatically sets the appropriate scene mode, from the most frequently used modes such as -portrait, scenery, macro, night scenery and night portrait - according to the scene you're going to take. With the new scene selector, the camera automatically sets the most appropriate scene mode and adjusts the detailed picture quality setting according to its detecting exposure, metering focus distance, face of the subject and motion of the subject.

The Face Detection system helps the camera to recognise a human face and adjust AF/AE - allowing portrait photos to be taken effortlessly. Up to 15 human faces can be recognised simultaneously - perfect for group shots. The quick AF system allows the camera to start focusing on the subject even without pressing a shutter button halfway, to get the best result out of a shutter chance by minimising the AF time.

Unique to Panasonic, the new Intelligent Auto Mode does the hard work, so all you need to do is choose the shot you want!

At the heart of the camera
At the heart of the camera is the Venus Engine III, Panasonic's advanced image-processing engine that can record at a sensitivity setting as high as ISO 1600 with full resolution. The DMC-FZ18 boasts outstanding response time - for example the burst shooting mode boosts the capability of sequential shots to a rate of 3 frames per second at full resolution*. If this wasn't enough, you also get unlimited consecutive shooting** - which allows you to take photos in succession up to the capacity of the memory card or built in memory.

*Max. seven images in standard mode, four images in fine mode
**The consecutive shooting speed varies with the memory card, image size, and image compression mode. The number of shots depends on the memory card size, battery life, image size and image compression mode.

The Venus Engine III greatly improves noise reduction, with picture noise removed in stages during image processing. Critical noise is analysed, and chromatic and luminance noise are reduced separately. The chromatic noise, which has greater effect on picture quality, is then selectively suppressed, resulting in clearer images.

The Venus Engine III also supports a new High Sensitivity mode that lets the DMC-FZ18 record at a setting of up to ISO 6400 - sensitive enough to capture subjects in near-total darkness without using a flash*. This advanced processing engine is also energy efficient - its low power consumption means you can shoot around 400 images on a single charge, for a full day of shooting fun.
*In 3-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording)

Inherently user friendly
The joystick that was so popular in the sister model DMC-FZ8, is employed in the FZ18 - for manual adjustment of focusing and exposure setting. Panasonic has redesigned the FZ18 to make it more stylish and enhance its operational ease. For example, the newly incorporated AF/AE lock button maintains the focus and exposure values that were automatically fixed when the lock button was pressed. This means that there are no more worries about accidently changing a delicate focus point after you've worked hard to get it right. The Custom setting is also incorporated to memorise your frequent setting patterns to be instantly applied by simply selecting this function with the mode dial.

The DMC-FZ18 features the new Advanced Scene Mode, offering the simple operation the same as the Scene Mode setting, but with some additional adjustments available to users. The frequently used scene modes (portrait, sports, landscape and night portrait) have been added to the mode dial and within these modes users can select either standard, outdoor, indoor or creative to capture more suitable images. For example creative changes factors such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO - outdoor changes backlight compensation, and indoor changes the I.S.O.

As easy as LCD
The new models boast a 207K pixel high resolution, 2.5" large LCD so you can effortlessly capture and playback your pictures. The camera detects the light condition and automatically boosts the LCD backlighting by 40% when shooting outdoors in bright sunshine, and boosts signals by mixed-pixel readout method when shooting under low-lit situation to secure a clear image in any circumstance. The High Angle mode, which can be accessed quickly and easily via a dedicated button, makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as to shoot over a crowd.

Quick and Smart AF and Easy Manual Focusing
To match the shooting situation and subject's position, the user can select from six auto-focusing methods: face detection, multi, 3-point high-speed, 1-point high-speed, 1-point normal-speed, and spot. With the 1-point AF or spot AF method, the auto-focusing area can be chosen from as many as 11 points with the joystick or cursor button. Various group area patterns can also be selected in the new Multi method.

With the newly added Face Detection system, the detection keeps working on the faces even if subjects are moving so that the time for AF is minimized before you click away the shutter.

Manual focusing, which is a valuable tool for professional-level photography, is also easy thanks to the joystick, and instant switching between AF and MF is available with the independent AF/MF button. The DMC-FZ18 is also equipped with AF Macro button and it activates One-Shot AF function in MF mode with a single press of the button. In both AF/MF, the subject just 1cm away can be finely captured sparing no detail of it so you can experience the dynamic close-up of macro shots.

To further add to its appeal the FZ18 can save image data in the RAW film format for your photographic freedom. For editing and developing in the RAW file format, the FZ18 comes complete with SILKYPIX Developer Studio 2.0SE software application. Approximately 27MB of built-in memory is provided and the camera accommodates large SDHC memory cards for your convenience.

For users who feel that ordinary compact cameras simply do not give them the functions and control they need for full enjoyment, the Lumix DMC-FZ18 serves as a gateway to truly creative photography.

*n 2-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel(3:2), 2-megapixel(16:9) recording)

As easy as LCD
The new models boast a 230K pixel high resolution, 3.0" large LCD (2.5inch, 207k pixels high resolution LCD for the FX33) so you can effortlessly capture and playback your pictures.

The Intelligent LCD of both models detects the light condition and automatically boosts the LCD backlighting by 40% when shooting outdoors in bright sunshine, and boosts signals by mixed-pixel readout method when shooting under low-lit situation to secure a clear image in any circumstance. The High Angle mode, which can be accessed quickly and easily via a dedicated button, makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as to shoot over a crowd.

Bright and beautiful motion pictures
With TV screens getting bigger and picture definition increasing, consumers want to be able to shoot higher-quality still images and motion pictures. With the DMC-FX33 and DMC-FX55, you can shoot hi-definition 1920 x 1080 pixel photos that are ideal for full-screen viewing on a wide-screen (16:9) TV. Panasonic also offers the DMW-SDP1 HDTV photo player, which makes it easier to view a slideshow of Lumix photos in full 1080i high-definition quality.

Fitting a wide-screen television perfectly, these wide-aspect motion images captured by the DMC-FX55 and DMC-FX33 make for extremely impressive viewing.

A camera that works with you
Approximately 27 MB of built-in memory is provided, and the cameras accommodate large-capacity SDHC memory cards. Building on the success of the baby mode and pet modes, Panasonic has gone one step further to include the new Title Edit* function, which allows users to input text on the picture, such as names of children or pets and travel places. When combined with Text Stamp function**, the DMC-FX55 and FX33 can show on which day of the trip a photo was taken together with the place you went to, in addition to showing the date a photo was taken for pictures using Travel Date function. It can also stamp your baby or pet's age in months on a photo together with his/her name, after you've taken the shots. These dates, which can be helpful when making a photo album, can be stamped on photos whether you print them yourself at home or have them printed.

*When the date is stamped on a photo, the photo is automatically resized to 3-megapixel, or the original size is maintained for photos smaller than 3-megapixel. You can choose either to save or overwrite the original picture.
**Optional

The DMC-FX55 and FX33 also provide Category Playback function, which sorts images into such categories as portraits, scenery, night scenery, events, baby, pet, food, travel date-stamped and motion pictures, so you can play back or make slideshows of a particular type of image. The DMC-FX55/FX33 also offers a Clipboard function that lets you use the camera to hold and retrieve useful information on a trip. For example, you can quickly and easily take shots of a map or train schedule, and view them when needed. The FX33 is compatible with a marine case** with which users can shoot underwater while scuba diving etc.

The tiny proportions of these cameras belie the wealth of innovation. Small enough to slip neatly into a pocket - these cameras offer superb performance and impressive quality can be carried anywhere at any time. Highly technically specified with the 28mm wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens, and newly incorporated Intelligent Auto Mode, the new additions are an investment in your photographic future. Available from September 2007.

The judge said that his image entitled ‘The Gardians’, taken in Montagnac, Southern France stood out from the rest due to its composition, the dramatic imagery of the horses and their formation and grouping.

“One of my photographic loves is horses and for many years I photographed equestrian events from local riding clubs to polo matches,” recalls Michael. “In 2004, my wife and I travelled to the Camargue in southern France to visit friends in the village of Montagnac. By pure accident, we had arrived in time to see a local festival in the next village, which included a competition between two teams of horses and riders demonstrating their control in marshalling playful bulls. The riders are known as ‘Gardians’ which is the name I have given the winning photo.”

‘The Gardians’ can be seen on the RPS Travel Group website here: www.travelgroup.rps.org/exhibition/index.html

Michael, a Nikon user for the last 35 years, lives in Hampshire. His photographic experience covers a wide range of subjects from the natural world, lifestyle and corporate to Michael’s passion of wildlife photography for which he is most well known. His interest in wildlife photography heralds from many visits to the African continent. In 2003 Michael gained his ARPS in nature photography with the Royal Photographic Society and in 2005, he was awarded the bronze medal for one of his African wildlife images by the Nature Group of the RPS. Michael has had various pictures and articles published in a variety of magazines and photographic journals. He has also displayed his work at numerous exhibitions for which he has received outstanding acclaim. His photography, available as limited edition pictures, note cards and exhibition-range framed pictures, can be viewed and purchased at www.michaelhuggan.com

MicroSync from Tamrac release the world’s smallest and lightest wireless radio slave flash trigger

MicroSync Digital is a tiny, advanced radio transmitter which slips onto the hot shoe of your camera and wirelessly transmits a signal to the receiver unit in order to remotely trigger your flash when the camera is fired.

Measuring just 27x51x11mm and weighing just 30g, the transmitter is significantly smaller than other systems on the market and just a fraction of the weight. With 4 channels to choose from you can also maintain separation between yourself and other Photographers running MicroSync nearby.

Both the sender and receiver incorporate an advanced automatic power management system which turns the units on when the shutter is pressed and off again milliseconds later, this gives an expected battery life for the transmitter of 3 years. Since this power management is totally automatic with no on/off buttons there is no chance of accidentally draining your batteries by leaving the unit turned on.

Adapters are also available to link MicroSync to your camera’s PC socket if the hot shoe is occupied, or to link it to your PC socket equipped flashmeter for wireless test shots. Additionally, MicroSync can be connected to your camera’s remote socket and used to wirelessly fire the shutter. Additional senders & receivers are also available separately.

The MicroSync transmitter and receiver Kit will be available at all good photographic dealers from June at a suggested retail price of £189.99.

Full details can be found on the Tamrac UK website at www.tamrac.co.uk

Pentax introduces the K100D Super with Dust Removal System for flawless, user-friendly photography

Pentax launches the Pentax K100D Super, a new standard-class digital SLR camera boasting advanced features to enable photographers of all levels to produce the highest quality images with minimum effort.

Based on the extremely popular Pentax K100D lens-interchangeable digital SLR camera, the easy-to-hold and easy-to-use K100D Super features an innovative Dust Removal (DR) system to keep dust off the CCD surface and ensure optimum image quality. It also incorporates the Pentax-developed Shake Reduction (SR) system which reduces camera shake for sharp, blur-free images even under the most demanding shooting conditions such as when using a telephoto lens or for extended exposures for sunset and night scenes.

The K100D Super’s sophisticated SAFOX VIII auto-focus system has 11 sensor points (with nine cross-type sensors in the middle) to automatically capture off centre subjects in crisp focus. By combining 6.1 effective megapixels with a high-performance imaging engine and advanced image-processing technologies, the K100D Super is designed to produce beautiful true-to-life images that are rich in gradation. In addition, it boasts a choice of two finishing touches of “natural” or “bright” to create a distinctive atmosphere and an Auto Picture mode for effortless point and shoot photography.

The K100D Super accepts both conventional SD memory cards and also the newly standardised SDHC cards which allow a much greater number of images to be stored on the camera.

The camera will retail at £TBC.

Main Features:

1. Pentax original Shake Reduction mechanism for sharp, blur-free images
Using magnetic force, this SLR system shifts the camera’s image sensor vertically and horizontally at the optimum speed to compensate for the amount of camera shake detected, assuring outstanding compensation effects (equivalent to approximately 2 to 3.5 shutter steps). Since this versatile system is compatible with all existing PENTAX interchangeable lenses*, it does not require special anti-shake lenses equipped with add-on optics or devices.

*Compatible with K-, KA-, KAF-, KAF2-mount lenses without an adaptor, and screw-mount, 645-system and 67-system lenses with an adaptor. Available functions may be limited with certain lenses.

2. Dust Removal system to keep dust off the CCD surface

Applied to the CCD surface through a vapour deposition process of a fluorine compound, the PENTAX-original Super Protect (SP) coating effectively removes dust and stains from the surface. In the next step, dust that still remains on the surface will be shaken off when the SR system shifts the CCD at high speed. The dust that is shaken off the CCD will fall onto an adhesive sheet positioned at the bottom of the SR unit, eliminating any possibility of its returning to the CCD surface.

3. Auto sensitivity control up to 3200 standard output sensitivity

The K100D Super features an auto sensitivity control function, which automatically sets the optimum standard output sensitivity — up to 3200, which is the highest automatic setting in its class — based on such data as the subject’s brightness level and the lens’ focal length. Since this function allows the use of higher shutter speeds in poor lighting situations (such as indoor sports events and night scenes), it helps the photographer to effectively reduce camera shake and prevent blurred images. The user can pre-program a desired level, from ISO 200 to the super-high sensitivity of the ISO 3200.

4. Auto Picture Mode for effortless point-and-shoot SLR photography

The Pentax-original Auto Picture mode automatically and instantly selects one of five picture modes (including portrait, landscape, and macro) to create the most appropriate visual effect for a given subject. Since the camera sets all primary parameters (including shutter speed, aperture, white balance, saturation, contrast and sharpness), the photographer can concentrate on picture composition and shutter opportunity.

5. 11-point wide-frame AF to capture off-centre subjects in crisp focus

The K100D Super’s sophisticated SAFOX VIII autofocus system features 11 sensor points (with nine cross-type sensors in the middle) to automatically focus on the subject with utmost precision, even when it is positioned off centre. The in-focus sensor point is automatically superimposed in red in the viewfinder for at-a-glance confirmation.

6. Large LCD monitor to facilitate image viewing and menu setting

The K100D Super features a large 2.5-inch colour LCD monitor on its back panel. Its wide-view design allows the photographer to check the monitor image over 140 degrees vertically and horizontally, ensuring effortless image viewing even from a diagonal position. It provides 210,000 pixels for high-resolution image viewing, with a zoom display function that lets users magnify images up to 12 times.

7. Bright, clear viewfinder

The K100D Super features a lightweight penta-mirror viewfinder, which combines Pentax-original finder optics with a Natural-Bright-Matte II focusing screen to deliver a bright, clear subject image with a 0.85-times magnification and a 96-percent field of view.

8. True-to-life, rich-gradation images assured by 6.1 effective megapixels
The K100D features a large, high-performance 23.5mm x 15.7mm CCD as its image sensor, assuring the faithful reproduction of the desired photographic intention in the resulting images — from images with beautiful out-of-focus backgrounds to those with edge-to-edge sharpness.

9. Compatibility with high-quality, high –capacity SDHC memory card

The K100D Super accepts not only the conventional SD memory card as its storage media, but also the newly standardized SDHC card, ** which allows the user to store a great number of large data files, such as RAW-format images.

** SD High Capacity card, with a storage capacity exceeding 2 GB

10. Compatibility with SDM system for smoother, quieter auto-focusing operation
The K100D Super’s camera body is compatible with a new SDM system, which assures smoother, quieter autofocusing operation using a built in supersonic motor. When the lens equipped with SDM system is mounted on the Pentax K100D Super camera body, the focus mode is automatically switched to SDM assisted autofocusing.

11.Compact, lightweight body with optimum holding comfort
The K100D Super has been designed to be compact and lightweight for easy carrying and enhanced maneuverability. It also offers an easy-to-hold grip to assure a stable shooting position.

12. Other features

o 19 custom functions to personalise camera operations

o Consecutive shooting of up to five frames at the speed of approximately 2.8 frames per second (at BEST image quality in JPEG format)

o Eight distinctive Scene modes to accommodate specific subjects/applications

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.1 now available

Lightroom Update Offers New Functionality, Improved Raw Processing and Support for Windows Vista

Adobe Photoshop(r) Lightroom(tm) 1.1 is now available as a free upgrade for existing users, with added functionality and support for Windows(r) Vista(tm). Lightroom 1.1 adds a flexible image management system for multi-computer workflows, improved noise reduction and sharpening, and raw file support for 13 additional digital cameras from leading manufacturers including Canon, Nikon, Olympus, and Phase One.

"Although the beta period has ended, we are happy to say that Photoshop Lightroom continues to incorporate user feedback with this latest update," says Tom Hogarty, product manager for Photoshop Lightroom. "We are committed to continuing this partnership with our customer base by working together to make a program that best suits their digital imaging workflow needs."

Lightroom enables professional photographers to import, manage and present large volumes of digital photographs helping them spend more time behind the lens and less time at the computer. Improvements in Lightroom 1.1 include a new image management system that allows flexible multi-computer workflows. A catalog-based system means photographers now can move images and information quickly between their computers. Lightroom 1.1 further streamlines the digital photography workflow with the addition of a convenient way to synchronize folders in the program with new or changed photos. Other changes include improved noise reduction and sharpening functionality, utilizing customer feedback and technology from industry-standard Photoshop.

High-Quality Raw Processing

Lightroom leverages Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw technology and also supports JPEG and TIFF file formats, bringing raw conversion into a single workflow experience. Lightroom 1.1 adds support for 13 additional digital cameras including the Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Fuji FinePix S5 Pro; Nikon D40x; Olympus E-410, and Olympus SP-550 UZ; Ricoh Caplio GX 100; Sigma SD 14; Phase One H 20, Phase One H 25, Phase One P 20, Phase One P 21, Phase One P 25, Phase One P 30 and Phase One P 45. This support means that photographers can use Lightroom with even the newest cameras on the market, knowing that the image files will be recognized today and in the future.

Upon import, files can be converted to the Digital Negative specification (DNG) or renamed and segmented by folder or date. DNG is an industry-wide initiative to create a universal file format for solving workflow and archiving issues. It aims to eliminate barriers to new camera adoption while giving professional photographers the confidence that their digital body of work is securely archived and will remain accessible as digital imaging technology evolves.

Pricing and Availability

The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.1 update is available as a free download for existing customers on www.adobe.com. Photoshop Lightroom can be purchased in the United States and Canada through the Adobe Store at www.adobe.com/store and at major photo and software retailers for a price of US $299. Minimum system requirements are Macintosh OSX 10.4, 1 GHz PowerPC(r) G4, or Microsoft(r) Windows(r) XP SP2 or Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise, Intel(r) Pentium(r) 4 processor, 768 MB RAM and a 1024x768 resolution screen. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is a Universal Binary application that will run natively on PowerPC and new Intel-based Macintosh systems.

Other confirmed speakers include Doug Allan, a specialist in Arctic/Antarctic photography; Karl Ammann, celebrated for his often hazardous efforts to chronicle the bushmeat trade; Gary Braasch, internationally known through his photo-documenting of the effects of global warming; Eddie Ephraums, an expert user and teacher of creative development techniques; Robert Glenn Ketchum, the acclaimed and highly influential landscape photographer; and Norway’s Pål Hermansen, who combines nature, landscape and photography to create fine art.

They will be joined by leading photographic agents and publishers, to offer a programme that takes in technical and digital advice, commercial opportunities, fieldcraft, artistry and the role of nature photography in conservation and environmental campaigning.

Tickets for the symposium are on sale now and cost £95 for one day (£75, students, State benefit claimants and over-60s) or £165 (£125 concession) for both days. Bookings can be made online at http://www.wildphotos.org.uk or telephone the WildPhotos office on 0117 328 5950.

WildPhotos 2007 grew out of a single day’s event run in Bristol last year by the conservation charity Wildscreen, and ARKive – Wildscreen’s free-to-view digital library for film, photos and fact-files of endangered species.

Wildscreen’s chief executive, Harriet Nimmo, explains: “Images of nature play a vital role in helping people to understand the diversity of life on Earth, and in inspiring us to take care of it. Our aim with WildPhotos 2007 is to empower more photographers to create and share images that matter, by giving them access to world-class talent and expertise.”

The event is being programmed by Rosamund Kidman Cox and will take place in association with Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year, the winners of which will be announced at The Natural History Museum, London, on the eve of the symposium.

The principal sponsor of WildPhotos 2007 is CEMEX, the global building-solutions company that annually produces a high-quality book, where new environmental thinking is combined with images of nature to provide a better understanding of how we can protect and nurture the world we live in.

Additional sponsorship is from Canon (UK) Ltd, part of the global Canon company that invents and retails a broad range of information and imaging technology, including business solutions and the cameras, binoculars, camcorders, scanners, printers and multimedia LCD projectors that are much favoured by the nature imaging sector.

Fujifilm drops the Big Job – a hard hat of a camera

Fujifilm is pleased to announce the launch of the FinePix Big Job HD-3W – the first camera of its kind to be released by Fujifilm in the UK. It is a heavy-duty and highly practical digital camera designed to be used in the most challenging of environments. Having withstood a drop test to 70cm and featuring a rubber grip and big buttons, this waterproof, dust proof and shockproof camera can endure what other cameras only dream of. The FinePix Big Job HD-3W is perfect for the construction, engineering, health and safety and manufacturing industries, or any environment where it is likely to get knocked around.

The FinePix Big Job HD-3W features many improvements over its predecessor resulting from customer feedback in Japan. The new model combines a wide-angle 3x (28-84mm) optical zoom lens with a large, scratch resistant 3” LCD screen so images can be viewed on the back of the camera more clearly. The camera also features a 6 Megapixel CCD sensor and ISO sensitivity of up to 1600, so detailed, low noise images can be captured in low light levels, such as dark construction sites, without the need for flash. However, for times when flash is needed, the powerful built in strobe enables longer flash distance of up to 10 meters. In addition, the layout of the big, easy-to-use buttons allows the camera to be used whilst wearing gloves, ensuring it will not be dropped at the most crucial moment.

In two world firsts for the FinePix range the Big Job HD-3W features ‘Detection of Manipulation’ and ‘CALS’ modes. The first highlights any tampering that has occurred to images after the photo has been taken. Using the FinePix viewer software on a computer, it is possible to check whether the image has been processed or edited to ensure the integrity of all images. The CALS mode takes photos at 1MP – an ideal size for attaching and distributing via email. These unique features, along with the Shot Date function, which records the time and date that the photo was taken, make monitoring and reporting the progress of work highly reliable and as simple as possible.

Adrian Clarke, Director of Photo Products at Fujifilm UK Ltd. said, “Since digital cameras are electronic devices, they generally do not take kindly to knocks, damp or dust. For many years, Fujifilm Tokyo has been marketing a heavy-duty camera for the construction industry with great success, so we decided to market this latest Big Job model in the UK. It may have an unusual name, but it's perfect for heavy industrial use, where high quality, no fuss pictures are required without worrying about damage to the camera. There aren't many models out there specifically designed for this kind of use, so we expect demand to be strong.”

Olympus supports refugee photo camp in Uganda

Olympus, the camera manufacturer, is sponsoring an exhibition of photographs by young refugees of war and famine in Uganda. ‘Through the Eyes of Children – Life as a Refugee in Uganda’ will run for three weeks in London’s South Bank at the.gallery@oxo from 14th June to 1st July 2007.

In November 2006 Olympus supported the International Medical Corps UK and National Geographic, in a series of workshops set up in a refugee settlement in south-western Uganda. The IMC UK are a global humanitarian organisation who actively dedicates their time to saving and rebuilding lives through healthcare, training and community development. Through the use of photo/art therapy projects, young children were encouraged to learn new skills of photography from a team of renowned National Geographic photographers. Using the Olympus E System, the young refugees aged between 12 and 20 were able to communicate the harsh reality of their displaced lives. The result of these workshops is a powerful visual exhibition.

“We are delighted to sponsor this event” says Mark Thackara, General Manager for Marketing at Olympus UK. “The exhibition sets out to highlight the amazing resilience and creativity of children and reinforces how photography can inspire and change the lives of those who have never even used a camera before”. The exhibition will coincide with the UK’s Refugee Week (18th – 24th June) and International Refugee Day, the Celebrating Sanctuary Weekend (16th – 17th June) and the Coin Street Festival that will run along the South Bank throughout June and July.

Summer launch for Harman Photo Gloss FB

HARMAN technology has announced it is to bring forward the launch of the third product in its range of pioneering professional inkjet papers, following a growing demand for a gloss finish from photographers all over the world. The HARMAN PHOTO MATT FB Mp launched this February and the warmtone equivalent launched in May have already had a big impact since their arrival in the marketplace, and such is the demand for a gloss product that HARMAN has changed its launch schedule.

Howard Hopwood, marketing director at HARMAN technology commented: “Ever since we unveiled the HARMAN PHOTO prototypes at Photokina last year, people have been very keen to see the gloss product, but interest has heightened further since photographers have got their hands on the matt product.”

“The initial launches have created a real buzz around the range, and since the gloss product is very near completion, we didn’t want to keep people waiting any longer than absolutely necessary.”

Like its predecessors in the range, the new HARMAN PHOTO GLOSS FB Al product incorporates real photo Baryta, which enhances colour definition, tonal range and archival properties. The new paper also uses Alumina technology to offer a sharp, smooth and robust gloss finish that helps to bring both colour and black and white images to life.

Howard Hopwood continued: “We have spent a long time developing this product, and we are very pleased with the outcome. I am confident that the new paper will be well received, and we are already developing a warmtone version for launch in the Autumn.”

At 320gsm, the fibre-based paper emulates the look, feel and weight of a traditional photographic print; something that has been a key goal for the HARMAN development team. Unique anti-curl technology has also ensured that the paper lies completely flat before and after printing, and as a nanoporous product the paper air-dries evenly.

Although HARMAN is yet to announce a formal launch date, the product will hit shelves in the UK, USA and Canada in July, with A4, A3, A3+, A2+ and rolls available.

More information can be found on the new product and the rest of the HARMAN PHOTO range at www.harman-inkjet.com
