Royal Geographical Society, Kensington, LondonChris Packham hosts WildPhotos 2007 - Exploring the power of nature photography

The power, potential and pitfalls of nature photography will be explored and explained by some of the artform’s best-respected international exponents when WildPhotos 2007 takes place in London on 26 and 27 October this year.

Frans Lanting leads the line-up for the new event, to be held at the Royal Geographical Society, Kensington, London, in partnership with Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

Other confirmed speakers include Doug Allan, a specialist in Arctic/Antarctic photography; Karl Ammann, celebrated for his often hazardous efforts to chronicle the bushmeat trade; Gary Braasch, internationally known through his photo-documenting of the effects of global warming; Eddie Ephraums, an expert user and teacher of creative development techniques; Robert Glenn Ketchum, the acclaimed and highly influential landscape photographer; and Norway’s Pål Hermansen, who combines nature, landscape and photography to create fine art.

They will be joined by leading photographic agents and publishers, to offer a programme that takes in technical and digital advice, commercial opportunities, fieldcraft, artistry and the role of nature photography in conservation and environmental campaigning.

Tickets for the symposium are on sale now and cost £95 for one day (£75, students, State benefit claimants and over-60s) or £165 (£125 concession) for both days. Bookings can be made online at http://www.wildphotos.org.uk or telephone the WildPhotos office on 0117 328 5950.

WildPhotos 2007 grew out of a single day’s event run in Bristol last year by the conservation charity Wildscreen, and ARKive – Wildscreen’s free-to-view digital library for film, photos and fact-files of endangered species.

Wildscreen’s chief executive, Harriet Nimmo, explains: “Images of nature play a vital role in helping people to understand the diversity of life on Earth, and in inspiring us to take care of it. Our aim with WildPhotos 2007 is to empower more photographers to create and share images that matter, by giving them access to world-class talent and expertise.”

The event is being programmed by Rosamund Kidman Cox and will take place in association with Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year, the winners of which will be announced at The Natural History Museum, London, on the eve of the symposium.

The principal sponsor of WildPhotos 2007 is CEMEX, the global building-solutions company that annually produces a high-quality book, where new environmental thinking is combined with images of nature to provide a better understanding of how we can protect and nurture the world we live in.

Additional sponsorship is from Canon (UK) Ltd, part of the global Canon company that invents and retails a broad range of information and imaging technology, including business solutions and the cameras, binoculars, camcorders, scanners, printers and multimedia LCD projectors that are much favoured by the nature imaging sector.
